Curtis Hasselbring is a trombonist, guitarist and composer who resides in Brooklyn, NY. Curtis leads the groups The New Mellow Edwards, Decoupage and the Curha-chestra. He has also been co/leading the newly-formed DaHa Orchestra with Andrew D'Angelo. Curha is Curtis's alias/nickname and is his sample-based project involving a stack of LPs, a wide variety of instruments and a general disdain for sunlight.
He has spent the last 20 years playing and recording with such diverse artists
as Medeski Martin & Wood, Slavic
Soul Party, Golem, Bobby Previte,
Gloria Deluxe, the
Either Orchestra, Andrew D’Angelo,
Mr. Dorgon, Satoko Fujii, the Jazz
Passengers, Frank London, Tom Harrell,
Cuong Vu’s Vu-tet, Roberto
Rodriguez and Anthony Coleman among others. Curtis appears on over 60
recordings including his first release as a leader with the New Mellow Edwards
on Skirl Records.
Curtis has composed a wide variety of music, including chamber music, music
for TV and large jazz ensemble pieces as well as his electronic works (as
Curha). Curtis’s music aims to strike a balance between the avant garde
and the listenable, between the inane and the intelligent, between the humorous
and the dark side.
